What does 4B11 stand for?

4B11

What is 4B11? It may sound pretty uninteresting to most, but if 4G63 means anything to you, you should certainly read on. Doesn’t ring a bell either? Ever heard of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution? For years the “Evo”, as it is affectionately called by many enthusiasts, has been one of only a few fine-tuned super sports cars on the market, the perfect choice for anyone who wants to have a sports car that is still usable as a “normal” sedan. 4G63 is the name of the legendary engine that powered the previous versions of the Lancer Evo. 4B11 is the successor and there’s every reason to expect it will equal the fame of its predecessor.

At first sight, the 4B11 doesn’t seem so different. The 4B11 is a 2.0 litre, four cylinder, twin cam, 16-valve engine. Then what is new about the 4B11?

4B11 – lighter. lower and better

The 4B11 is 12.5 kg lighter because it’s made of die-cast aluminium. The 4B11 is also more compact than its predecessor. With the exhaust manifold now located at the rear side of the engine, it was possible for the engine to be placed 10mm lower since the exhaust pipe does not need to cross the engine underneath. This helped to reduce weight and to position the car’s center of gravity closer to the ground, which is of course a good thing in a sports car.

But the 4B11 is not just lighter and positioned lower than the 4G63, it outperforms the former 4G63 in terms of power and torque, producing 295 hp and 366Nm of torque.

4B11 – ins and outs

Where does the better performance of the 4B11 come from? One of the main reasons is the improved speed at which the turbo responds. Response times have been improved by up to 18 percent over the 4G63 due to improved internal flow. Featuring now also an inconel turbine wheel increases the heat resistance of the turbo charger during long time high speed driving.

Also new is the aluminium cylinder head that is not only lighter, but also helps to improve cooling efficiency and fuel economy. Through By using direct valve control (no valve rockers anymore), the 4B11 has a better and more accurate valve response, which results in greater reliability and allows higher engine speeds.

The 4B11 utilizes the Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control (MIVEC) on both the exhaust and the intake valves, resulting in more torque and output over the full rev range.

The 4B11 shows how Mitsubishi has succeeded in developing an engine with both superior performance and excellent fuel economy and clean emissions.
